The tiny village in northern Kerala, 14 km. south of Kasargod is poised to become an important tourist centre and health resort of the state. It is known for the mighty fort, excellent beaches, backwaters and colorful festivals.
BekalFort - The fort is believed to have been built by Shivappa Naik of the Ikkeri dynasty in 1650, some experts credit the Kolathiri Raja's for the construction of the fort. In l8th century the fort came under Tipu Sultan, the mosque near the fort is believed to have been built by him. Later on the fort was captured by the British. The observation towers of the fort afford breath taking views of the scenic surrounding and the beautiful Bekal beach. The historical Bakel Beach is being developed as an International Tourist destination.
